部活動bukatsudo
Quick definition:Club activities are after-school groups at Japanese schools, covering sports, arts and hobbies, and they are a very common setting for anime and manga stories about friendship and teamwork.

Meaning

Club activities, called bukatsudo or simply bukatsu in Japanese, are the clubs that students join at middle and high schools in Japan. They meet after lessons and often at weekends, and they range from baseball, volleyball and kendo to music, art, drama, tea ceremony and science. Students usually stay in the same club for several years.

Anime and manga use clubs as a ready-made way to bring a group of characters together. A story may follow a struggling sports team aiming for a national tournament, a tiny literature club with a few members, or a group that exists for a purpose nobody quite understands. Club rooms, summer training camps and school festivals are familiar scenes.

The setting matters to fans because it explains why many series centre on school life, effort and companionship. It also shows a real part of Japanese student life, where club membership can shape friendships and routines as much as classes do.

Origin:Bukatsudo is a Japanese word made from bu, meaning a club or department, and katsudo, meaning activity. The shortened form bukatsu is the everyday version. School clubs are a long-standing part of Japanese education, and anime and manga adopted them as a standard setting because they were familiar to the Japanese audiences these stories were first made for.
Example:A typical example is a school volleyball or baseball club in a sports anime, where new members join, practise every day and work towards a big match. A gentler version is a small after-school club with only a few members, such as a literature or cooking club, where the story is about everyday friendship rather than winning.
Did you know?Clubs are one of the main places where the senpai and kohai relationship, between older and younger students, plays out in practice. Younger members often address seniors respectfully and take on chores such as cleaning, a dynamic that anime frequently reflects.
