ツンデレtsundere
Quick definition:A tsundere is a character who acts harsh, cold or hostile towards someone they like, but gradually reveals a gentler, affectionate side once their embarrassment fades.
Meaning
Tsundere describes a character who acts cold, prickly or openly hostile towards someone they secretly like, then shows a softer and more affectionate side when their guard drops. The label is most often applied to girls in romantic comedies, though it can describe characters of any gender.
The hostile behaviour is usually a defence. The character may be embarrassed by their feelings, afraid of rejection or simply unable to say what they mean, so teasing, insults and sudden outbursts stand in for honesty. Flustered denials, such as insisting they do not care, are a common sign. The warm side tends to appear in small moments, such as a reluctant favour or a blush that gives the game away.
Tsundere is one of the best-known character archetypes in fandom, and it shapes how stories build tension between characters. Fans enjoy the slow reveal of the softer side, although some critics find the violent outbursts in older examples tiresome. The term is now common in English-language fan talk as well.
Origin:The word blends two Japanese sound-words: tsun tsun, describing a cold, turned-away or irritable manner, and dere dere, describing a lovestruck, melting softness. It became popular in Japanese online fan communities in the early 2000s, and the exact source of the term is unclear. It later spread into English-language fandom alongside anime itself.
Example:In Toradora!, Taiga Aisaka is widely described as a tsundere. She is small, fierce and quick to lash out, particularly at Ryuji Takasu, the boy she ends up spending much of her time with. Over the series her tough front slips, revealing someone who is lonely, caring and far more vulnerable than her temper suggests.
Did you know?Tsundere sits in a family of fan terms built on the same -dere ending, including yandere, kuudere and dandere. Each pairs a different outward manner with romantic devotion, and fans often use them as shorthand when comparing character types in anime and manga.
